This individual may work at an agency, administrative branch, legislative branch, local government, or other public entity. This award recognizes someone who has gone above and beyond to work with miners to continue or improve the industry’s presence in Alaska and achieve shared results for Alaska’s economy, communities, and residents. Their unwavering dedication to their mission serves as an inspiration to others. This person began his role in 2006 and immediately went to work delivering MSHA compliance training across Alaska. He spent three weeks or more of every month away from home, traveling all over the state. For over 15 years, he made monthly trips to Juneau, Fairbanks, and Anchorage to deliver classes in person. He slept in school gyms so he could teach the next day in the community’s school. He taught many hours in cramped overfull classrooms, the backrooms of diners, and in maintenance shops. He taught in remote areas of Yukon Territory and was Alaska’s representative at MSHA’s national meeting in Beckley, WV. When COVID-19 hit, he was one of the first in the nation to make the transition to deliver certified MSHA training on a live interactive platform. He oversaw the approval by MSHA and started online delivery just one month after in-person classes had been shut down. In the next three months, he delivered Refresher training to over 450 students who otherwise would not have been able to attend in person. He is now a master at that delivery, receiving high marks not only from students but also from MSHA educational field officers who frequently visit his online classroom. They all are impressed by his skills in keeping students engaged and interested. He has taught the Underground and Surface Refresher classes here at the AMA Conference for over 15 years! We honor the commitment he has made as a public servant to safety in mining and in life, and we are delighted to award the first AMA Public Service Award to Sam Reves. Sam Reves, Public Service Award
