TREASURES IN THE TOWN OF TIETON Tiny pieces of hand-cut glass come together in the hands of Tieton Mosaic’s artists to form murals and other art installations. Take the short drive to Tieton to tour public art mosaics, typographic mosaics, artful signage and even mosaic reproductions of vintage fruit labels, a nod to the Yakima Valley’s agricultural roots. Like many places, at one time, glowing neon signs graced the streets of Yakima. Once an almost lost art form, neon now enjoys a bit of a resurgence but remains rare. For fans of the art, Yakima Valley Museum gives new life to nearly a dozen of Yakima’s original, vintage neon signs in their hanging gallery, The Neon Garden. Formed through erosion of ancient lava flows, Boulder Cave is home to Pacific Western big-eared bats. The cave extends about 400 feet and runs alongside Devil Creek. The bats are a sensitive species in WA and OR. Follow posted precautions to protect them. Timed reservation system is enforced. Zillah’s Teapot Dome Service Station was hand-built in 1922 as commentary to a Harding Administration political scandal of the same name. Roughly 13 feet tall, complete with handle and spout, it now serves as a visitor center and world-famous selfie stop. Walk among the dinosaurs in Granger. Tour Granger’s Dinosaur Drive and find 33 hand-constructed dinosaurs all around the town. Stop for a photo op with a Megalosaurus, Velociraptor and more. plan your trip at visityakima.com 7 Read the full interview Four generations after their grandfather planted Schmidt Orchards, Patrick and Matt Rawn are growing and crafting awardwinning, estate-grown wines on the same lands. Their bond and love of the land is evident in their commitment to stewardship and sustainability, earning the first Rules for Sustainable Winegrowing certification. What does it mean to you to be stewards of the same lands your family has worked for generations? We view our role as just that. Stewards, not owners. We are just the family’s current iteration of stewarding this place. A big part of this stewardship is taking a long-term view and making every decision in the context of its impact on future generations. You’ve taken sustainability to a higher level with involvement in the creation of the new Sustainable WA certification, as well as earning certification for your vineyards. Do you see those practices growing in the Yakima Valley moving forward? An increasing amount of the valley’s acreage will most certainly become certified over the next couple of years. My guess is we will see at least half of the vineyard acreage become certified within five years. Most growers do a great job and really care deeply about their farms and the valley at large. Taking the step to become certified gives a grower the opportunity to tell the story of good things they are doing. It gives one a seat at the table. Additionally, Sustainable WA is built on the best science and practices that exist. Investing in meeting the standard provides a roadmap towards continually getting better as a grower. aOWEN ROE WINERY aLAPIERRE FARMS & WINERY aTWO MOUNTAIN WINERY - MATT RAWN AND PATRICK RAWN MEET THE MAKER MATT RAWN & PATRICK RAWN - TWO MOUNTAIN WINERY

12 aVANARNAM VINEYARDS - SUMMER CONCERT SERIES RATTLESNAKE HILLS Just 15 minutes from downtown Yakima, the Rattlesnake Hills AVA is one of Washington State’s most fertile grape growing regions. This unique area boasts ridgetop vineyards at more than 3,000 feet in elevation, higher in general than the Yakima Valley AVA overall. With 1,800 vine acres and two dozen wineries, this region specializes in cabernet sauvignon, malbec, merlot, syrah, chardonnay and riesling. The area’s wineries showcase distinctive, award-winning wines in picturesque settings surrounded by beautiful orchards, stunning views and acres of vineyards. With just minutes between each winery, it’s easy to plan a weekend tasting tour. Come roam The Hills, whether by bus, car, bicycle or horse. Most wineries in the Rattlesnake Hills area are family owned and operated, producing their wines from the ground up, from farm to glass. Unlike some larger wine destinations, here you can stroll through the vines with the growers and winemakers themselves, getting a first-hand perspective on how they make their wines. Each winery has a uniquely crafted tasting room, from Northwest modern architecture to traditional European and everything in between. Many of them have picnic areas perfect for a relaxing snack or lunch in the sun and they frequently host caterers and food trucks on the weekends. Don’t forget to ask questions! These winemakers love to share their wines and tell their stories. If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, be sure to visit Rattlesnake Hills during one of the Yakima Valley’s signature event weekends (page 9) throughout the year. Many of the wineries offer something special during these weekend celebrations. Be sure to follow the wineries’ social channels for winery events and experiences, food offerings and wine releases and promotions. plan your trip at visityakima.com 21 aVALLEY BREWING CO. aLOZA FARMS aWANDERING HOP BREWING CO. MEET THE GROWER LEON LOZA JR. - LOZA FARMS Read the full interview Leon Loza arrived in the Yakima Valley from Mexico in 1976 to begin working in the valley’s hop fields. That was just the beginning of a long, and often challenging, journey leading to the purchase of his first 56-acre hop farm in 2006. That journey eventually became a thriving family affair as Loza Farms grew to become a leading Yakima Valley hop producer and the only Mexican-American owned hop farm in the U.S. Today, Leon “Junior” Loza is the farm manager, and the hop operation remains a family passion. How has your father’s story and family journey influenced your hop farm operation as it has grown over the years? What do you see for the future? My father’s journey from Mexico and our family’s journey have been the driving force behind the success of our hop farm. The values of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice instilled by my parents have become the foundation of our operation. As the farm has grown over the years, these principles have guided our decisions, ensuring that every step forward comes from the same work ethic that brought us here. Looking to the future, we envision the continuation of this legacy, with a commitment to sustainable and responsible farming practices, as well as a focus on family unity. What do you enjoy about working with brewers and seeing/tasting your hops in the beers they craft? Witnessing our hops being transformed into unique and flavorful beers is a source of pride. Growing hops is tough work, but getting to taste the fruits of our labor in a great beer surrounded by good company is the best part of the job!

The U.S. produces more hops than any other country (including Germany). Washington State accounts for more than 70% of that, virtually all of that coming from the Yakima Valley. WHO KNEW?
