6 ASTORIA-WARRENTON AREA VISITOR GUIDE 2023-2024 HISTORY HISTO STEP INTO THE PAST Astoria is the first permanent US settlement west of the Rocky Mountains and we have more historical markers than any other region in Oregon. Located at the mouth of the 1,200 mile long Columbia River, Astoria and Warrenton were important meeting places for indigenous peoples long before the arrival of American pioneers. Six years after the Lewis and Clark Expedition arrived in the region and braved the winter of 1805 at Fort Clatsop, John Jacob Astor’s American Fur Company established a trading post where Astoria now stands. This area played a central role in the course of U.S. westward expansion. The Historic Area of Fort Stevens, which was a coastal defense fort active from the Civil War days through WW2.
