THE LINK: JULY 2023 44 Future of project still up in air pending Bristol Bay decision The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reviewing its denial of a key federal permit for the proposed large Pebble mine project in southwest Alaska, the agency said in late April. Brig. Gen. Kirk Gibbs, Division Engineer at the corps’ Pacific Ocean Division, said he found certain parts of an appeal to the denial by Pebble Partnership Ltd., the developer, to have merit. The review is unlikely to revive Pebble’s prospects, however, because the Corps must also reverse its decision to veto a large mine in the Bristol Bay region using its 404c Clean Water Act authority. Gibbs’ decision sends the matter back to the corps’ Alaska District for reconsideration. The Alaska District had earlier denied a U.S. Clean WaCorps reviewing denial of key permit for Pebble Photo Courtesy Pebble Limited Partnership Drilling underway at Pebble copper, gold, molybdenum deposit near Iliamna.
