Graphite One touts plans for operation on Seward Peninsula Resources continue to gather for the country’s largest potential graphite mine in Alaska. Bering Straits Native Corp. of Nome will invest $2 million in the Graphite One project 35 miles north of Nome, the corporation’s board decided Aug. 28. The agreement also provides an option for BSNC to invest another $8 million in the project. In July, the U.S. Department of Defense announced a $37.5 million grant to fund a feasibility study. BSNC’s $2 million will aid in the feasibility study and other predevelopment work. Vancouver, B.C.-based Graphite One Inc. is developing the project. Graphite One will invest $37.5 million of its own funds for the study, which is estimated to cost $75 million. A pre-feasibility study is already complete. The feasibility study involves final engineering and cost estimates, and is typically done just before a final investment decision. The planned mine is near the Nome-Teller Highway, an all-year road link. The road will allow trucking of ore concentrates to Nome for shipping. The deposit at Graphite Creek, where the mine is proposed, has been identified by the U.S. Geological Survey as the nation’s largest high-quality graphite deposit. Graphite has applications in the aerospace and energy sectors snd iis used in batteries, brake linings, lubricants, powdered metals and steelmaking. It is also used in renewable New graphite mine adding to investments
