Enter the Federal Telegraph Company lab at 913 Emerson Street in Palo Alto, where Lee de Forest discovered a way to boost weak signals, making them strong enough to go across many miles of wire. AT&T engineers used de Forest’s technology to build amplifiers and demonstrated it on January 25, 1915, placing the first transcontinental telephone call from New York to San Francisco.
