The Link - Spring 2024

“The fact is that Alaska is one place where there is enormous government involvement, both at the state and federal level. And that is unfortunate. That’s a major thread running through the day’s discussion. There is a long time span, an extraordinary time span, between discovery and production, and a long time span that precedes discovery… “The magnitude of the potential is astounding. Critical are the two issues that were approached at the very beginning … access to the land, or the sea…and the stability of taxing policy. The decade of the 70s represented a constant escalation of taxation. The Alliance was formed in 1979. There has been no escalation since then. Hear ye! “One of the things that emerged from today’s activities was a remarkable sense of history. There’s a solid, substantial, and substantive body of experience that ought to direct our attention.” “The future is clear. We need to do everything we can responsibly (and more) to influence intelligent public policy.” “And finally…we got a sense of Alaska history that can be characterized by some basic words: Tenacity. Ingenuity. And ultimately Industry. We found a happy sense of what we’re all about — a happy sense of what our possibilities are — a happy sense that we ought to have about ourselves and our accomplishments in the past and our potential for the future.” Become a Founding Member of The Alaska Oil & Gas Historical Society The Alaska Oil & Gas Historical Society (AKOGHS) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the oil and gas industry in Alaska.
