Camp Smith is home to the Pacific Command Headquarters Building. High atop a ridge of the Koolau mountains sits Camp H.M. Smith Headquarters of the Pacific Command (PACOM) that is responsible for all military operations throughout the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It also serves as headquarters of the Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. The view from Camp Smith is equally commanding — stretching from Diamond Head to Downtown Honolulu to Pearl Harbor and beyond. The 224-acre site was first intended to be used as a Naval hospital during World War II, but the Marine Corps acquired the area in 1955. The base was named after General Holland M. “Howlin’ Mad” Smith, a pioneer of amphibious warfare and the Camp’s first commander. From Honolulu, take H1 West to the H1/Highway 78 split. Follow 78 past Red Hill to the “Halawa Stadium/Camp Smith” exit. Make a right onto Halawa Heights Road. Head uphill and Camp Smith will be on your right.
