At the foot of the Waianae mountain range in central Oahu is Schofield Barracks — the largest army base on the island and home of the 25th Infantry Division and 8th Theatre Sustainment Command. The 25th Infantry Division, which is 11,000 soldiers strong, focuses on training for low-intensity conflict in Australia, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and the Philippines. The division was made famous after relieving the Marines at Guadalcanal in 1942, and earned the name “Tropic Lightning” for its quick mission-readiness. Many of the buildings along the treelined streets of the base elicit a strong sense of the past. In fact, most of the three-story barracks were built between 1914 and 1933. The Tropic Lightning Museum traces the history of Schofield through three wars and is open to the public. To reach Schofield from Honolulu, take H1 West to H2 North toward Wahiawa. Drive until the freeway ends and turns into Wilikina Road. Watch for the sign for Schofield Barracks. The main gate, Foote Gate, off Kunia Road is the first of three gates. Macomb Gate and McNair Gate are off Wilikina Road. CHECKING IN If you arrive at the airport without a sponsor meeting you, report to the 25th Replacement ID Cadre located across from Baggage Claim F at the Information Booth or check-in at the USO Office located on the ground level between Baggage Claim E & F. The USO can assist you in calling Schofield to send someone to pick you up.
