Hawaii Military Guide - Summer-Fall 2024

Youth Education 86 STUDENT TRANSITION CENTERS Hawaii is the temporary or long-term home for some 100,000 military personnel, spouses and children. HIDOE Student Transition Centers offer a safe and stable foundation via peer-to-peer mentoring by student ambassadors to support incoming students as they acclimate to their new school community. Transition Centers are rooted at public schools with higher populations of militarydependent students, such as Leilehua High, Mokapu Elementary and Radford High. A+ PROGRAM Out-Of-School-Time (OST) programs provide a safe venue for students between the end of the school day and the availability of their family and/or caregivers, and may extend to evenings, weekends, holidays and intersessions (including summer). Among these is the A+ Program. Available for children in kindergarten through grade six, A+ provides these students with time to complete homework, and participate in enrichment and physical activities such as arts, crafts, drama, dance, sports and games. The A+ Parent Handbook includes more information about the program. Of the more than 175 sites providing after school care through the program, some 100 are operated by the State of Hawaii. The others are handled by organizations such as the YMCA and Kamaaina Kids. For more details on A+ and other programs including REACH and UPLINK, click on the Hawaii Public Schools website’s “Beyond The Classroom” tab and check out “After School Programs”. You’ll find the “Afterschool Plus” link at the top of the list. Or call (808) 294-0178 or your elementary school office for more details. SCHOOLS & CLASSES (CONTINUED) CROSS ACADEMY Our Savior Lutheran School, now Cross Academy, builds a solid Christian foundation for learning that encompasses the whole child by including virtues and emotional maturity, as well as academic, moral, aesthetic, social, physical and service-leadership dimensions in a well-rounded educational program for preschool through eighth grade. Cross Academy teachers implement the S.T.E.A.M. project-based science, technology, engineering, art and math program to further inspire and prepare students with more real-world work. Promoting active learning, all K-8 classes have P.E., art and expert computer practice. After-school clubs, summer school and many event projects help to further expand the range and diversity of student’ educational experiences.
