Winning feels good, and it’s natural for your kids to have a competitive drive. Competition is an important experience in life, and can teach kids teamwork, cooperation and commitment. Some children are naturally more driven towards winning than others, but there will be many times in every child’s life that they have to deal with a disappointing loss. Ecstatic victories and crushing defeats are a natural part of life. How do we prepare them for the challenges that life will throw at them? BOUNCING BACK FROM A LOSS From a board game in the family room to a baseball field, losing causes pain and disappointment. There is also a good side to these emotions, and important lessons that can be learned from losing. “Learning to lose and to bounce back from a loss are essential life skills,” Says Katie Bowman, a family therapist with a masters from University of Hawaii, “if children aren’t exposed to the feelings associated with losing in their earlier years, they will find disappointments later in life more difficult to handle.” by Sarah Fox Winning feels good, and it’s natural for your kids to have a competitive drive.
