Oregon Business Magazine - July-August 2024

Jarod Cogswell General Manager at Life Time, Inc. What are you reading? Grit by Angela Duckworth. What are you watching? I’m a documentaries fan, especially those that consist of remarkable human performance, adventures and overcoming personal challenges. What are you listening to? Depends on the mood and what I am doing. On the mountain or trails: progressive house — Lane 8, Avoure, Sultan + Shepard, whatever gets me in a flow state. In the gym: hard rock, alternative or punk — Deftones, Fugazi, Queens of the Stone Age. Sometimes we need to get the aggression out! Podcasts: Ed Mylett. What is your must-have gadget? My portable ice bath; cold plunging has been a game changer for my energy levels, stress and physical recovery. What are your hobbies/ interests? Backcountry skiing/climbing; I’m currently at 94 summits on Mt. Hood with a goal of 100, running trails (Forest Park), HIIT workouts in and out of the club. What was your childhood or earliest ambition? To play shortstop for the San Francisco Giants and lead guitar for a hard-rock band. Where is your favorite place to vacation? My dream trip was to Chamonix, France. I can’t imagine a better alpine environment than the French Alps (the mountains, the people, the cultural diversity). When I was there, I smiled for 16 days in a row and I would love to go back so my wife can experience it as well. What is your biggest extravagance? Ball caps ... I have a lot of them! What motivates you to come to work? The energy of the fitness environment. I truly believe my purpose is to impact the lives around me, and fitness is such a powerful platform. In turn, the likeminded culture motivates me to be my best. ⁄Downtime⁄ LIVE WORK PLAY Who is your professional role model? This is a tough question as I’m inspired by many people out there consistently focused on serving others and maximizing their own potential personally, professionally, physically, mentally and emotionally. They all share a common thread — grit. I like hanging around those types of people. What ambitions do you still have? I’m really focused these days on my ability to continue to say “yes” to the activities that I’m passion about ... mostly to outdoor adventures and sharing those experiences with those I care about. I do realize that I’m getting older, but I rarely think about it. Heck, I still think I can beat my younger self and this current version of me has so much opportunity to be even better. I really do try to maintain a rookie mindset so that I continue to learn, grow and remain relevant. JASON E. KAPLAN 44
