For over 25 years, we’ve had the privilege of serving Bellevue and its surrounding enclaves, not just as a real estate team but as mother and son. One of the most remarkable aspects of being deeply rooted in a community is witnessing the passage of time through generations. The ties we’ve formed, the memories we’ve created, and the stories we’ve shared transcend mere transactions. It’s about understanding the needs and aspirations of our neighbors, helping them meet their real estate goals, and ultimately becoming a part of their own stories. To us, it’s a profound reminder of the lasting impact and influence a strong community can have on people’s lives. It’s a reassuring feeling to know that our community will endure and continue to be a place where families grow and thrive, where memories are made, and where the bonds of friendship and neighborly love remain strong. © 2023 Sotheby’s International Realty. 20 BEJEWELED LISA LINDSTROM CHERISHES connections to the past, and to her family. She adores items left to her by her grandmother, Marion. The team at Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler was able to restore two of Lisa’s grandmother’s pieces making them fit for frequent wear and allowing Marion’s “vivacious” spirit and memory to be worn time and time again. Lisa’s grandfather called the first piece, “His Irishman’s Heart.” He presented this splendid hand-made ring to Marion on their 25th wedding anniversary. It features a gorgeous heartshaped diamond surrounded by emeralds and delicate diamond filigree. The ring was passed down to Lisa’s mother to celebrate her 25th anniversary, and then to Lisa for her 50th birthday. Lisa adored the ring however some care was needed in order for it to be worn the way she wanted—with gusto. The second piece was a diamond brooch. Lisa wasn’t much of a brooch person but still wanted to wear one of Marion’s favorites. Both items were accompanied by a hand-written note from Marion sharing the history and emotion of these gifts. Lisa still has that note. Lisa asked Steven Goldfarb if His Irishman’s Heart could be restored to properly echo the legacy of her grandmother. The ring was cleaned, rebuilt, and reengraved. Similarly, the brooch was updated into a wearable sparkling pendant, a perfect choice for Lisa’s active lifestyle, and one that places her grandmother close to her heart. Eventually, both pieces will be passed to Lisa’s daughter, who is named for the matriarch. The younger Marion will be the fourth generation to care for, and cherish, these family heirlooms. After all, connections to family shouldn’t be stored away in a drawer— they should be with us, serving as a beautiful reminder for what matters most. “The past should be celebrated” says Lisa. Jewelry possesses the unique ability to tie us to a greater legacy, acting as a reminder of the most beautiful things in life. “Each time I wear Grandma’s jewelry I’m honoring her legacy.” CUSTOM BUILD A DEVOTED GRANDDAUGHTER RESTORES TWO BELOVED PIECES, GIVING THEM A NEW LIFE FOR HER AND THE NEXT GENERATION. BEJEWELED 21 FINE JEWELRY SHOULD BE LIVED IN AND LIVED WITH. Over the years a piece’s meaning changes, or it’s worn differently. Sometimes, it becomes something new altogether. Kay Larsen’s journey with Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler started over two decades ago when her husband, Stein, proposed with a custom engagement ring. This wasn’t a typical solitaire— Kay’s ring boasts an undeniable heft and sturdiness, something Stein knew she wanted. She came back from a run to find the ring and flowers on the kitchen table alongside a smiling fiancé. Kay loves the ring, “because it symbolizes the weight and significance of true love.” Even better, it’s truly one-of-a-kind. Shortly thereafter Kay purchased for herself a Rolex from Goldfarb’s to celebrate a career milestone. She wears it every day, and admits it’s often unintentionally worn as a bracelet, with the bezel facing inwards. What matters is that it’s always on her wrist. A few years later the Larsen’s took advantage of Goldfarb’s once-every-four-years Leap Year Sale (hint: the next one is February 2024) and purchased a pair of brilliant diamond stud earrings. The next Leap Year, Stein purchased a tennis bracelet to mark a significant birthday. Kay wore it just about everywhere—running four marathons, delivering two children, and doing lots of gardening. Eventually the bracelet lost its structural integrity and needed to be retired. Kay decided to remake it into something else entirely, and in doing so found a way to enjoy the diamonds even more. The first new style was a beautiful ring featuring staggered rows of diamonds. Easier to wear than her bracelet, Kay was the proud owner of another custom piece of jewelry. She was later gifted the diamond from a solitaire ring her father had purchased. It was combined with the bracelet’s remaining diamonds to form a spectacular pendant. “The diamonds looked lovely in the bracelet,” explains Kay, “but they took on a whole new life in the pendant and sparkled even more.” They were combined with a sturdy and elegant chain for something truly special. Kay’s birthday gift had moved from her wrist to her finger—and closer to her heart. Kay firmly believes that diamonds should be worn every day. Each of these pieces symbolize something bigger than a possession. They remind her of sweet memories, provide a profound sense of joy, and always garner a well-deserved compliment or two. 24 BEJEWELED PHOTOGRAPH BY XXXXX XXXXXX DOORWAY TO THE PAST YOU MAY HAVE HEARD THE QUOTE, “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. That saying certainly applies to Bellevue and the greater eastside. Bellevue has always been a place of new ideas and fantastic growth. In the early part of the 20th century, Bellevue had a reputation as a weekend getaway destination for Seattle residents who would arrive by ferry and spend the day. Bellevue was a small town with around 2,000 residents when the first bridge connected Seattle to the eastside by way of Mercer Island . After WWII, Bellevue rapidly evolved from small-scale farming to classic post-war suburbia with neighborhoods the likes of Enatai, Beaux Arts, Clyde Hill, View Crest, and Woodridge springing up, along with an open-air Bellevue Square, the John Danz Theater, and Belle Lanes Bowling. Bellevue High School used to stand in the middle of the current Bellevue Downtown Park until it moved to its current location in 1949. Today Bellevue Square is a well-known indoor mall, Belle Lanes is a Barnes and Nobel bookstore, and The John Danz Theater is a church. Cranes are everywhere. Still there The More Things Change 1959

BEJEWELED 25 1969 1976 2023 are pockets of old Bellevue here and there. Take for instance the Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler building which is one of Bellevue’s oldest— having been a barn in the 1930s, an auto repair shop in the 1940s, Lister Real Estate in the 1950s, and a travel agency into the 1970s. Alvin opened his namesake jewel box on April 1st, 1980. Do a web search of Bellevue notable businesses and you’ll be amazed to see the corporate headquarters of Paccar, T-Mobile, Expedia, and Eddie Bauer listed. Bellevue has always been a hub for innovation and will continue to be as the region reaches new heights, figuratively and literally. “Bellevue has always been a hub for innovation and will continue to be as the region reaches new heights, figuratively and literally.”

26 BEJEWELED STRONG FOUNDATIONS Above & Beyond REWARDING THOSE WHO WORK THE HARDEST TO EXEMPLIFY THE TRUEST SPIRIT OF TEACHING TEACHERS EVERYWHERE GO ABOVE AND BEYOND; never more so than during these last few pandemic years. The Above and Beyond Award was created to honor a teacher who exemplifies the true spirit of teaching by fostering a creative, engaging, and safe environment for students to learn and grow. For the second year Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler partnered with Greet West Bellevue magazine to honor such a teacher. “We are so excited to co- sponsor this award” says Steven Goldfarb. “Everyone knows of a teacher who impacted their life. I know from personal experience what a difference a teacher can make.” This year’s Above and Beyond Award winner is Mr. Randy “Litz” Litzenberger, who has been teaching history at Bellevue High for almost 25 years. Growing up, both his parents worked in education, which inspired him to pursue a career in the field as well. Litz loves teaching as much now as when he started, if not even more. Dr. Vic Anderson, Bellevue High School Principal, shared, “Litz is admired and respected by students and staff alike. He lives Bellevue’s vision to affirm and inspire every student to learn and thrive as creators of their future world. Mr. Litzenberger makes time for each student. He learns who they are, their goals, and who they want to be. It is this respect and dedication which allows his students to feel seen and to want to excel.” Mr. Litzenberger truly brings to life the Above and Beyond Award to life with his ongoing commitment to his students and their lives. The Bellevue community is lucky to have Litz, and so many other amazing nominees, who go above and beyond every day. PHOTOGRAPHS BY JACKIE PHAIROW

BEJEWELED 27 We Got You WHAT BETTER WAY TO SOLIDIFY A BOND THAN SAYING THANK YOU WITH A GIFT OF UNQUESTIONABLE CRAFTSMANSHIP. HOW DO YOU THANK SOMEONE who has changed your life? How do you show them just how much they mean to you? Get them something personal, sure. Something useful? Never a bad idea. A Rolex? That’s certainly going to go over well. William Tyler changed Carolyn Graham’s life—so she and her husband Jeff got him a personalized watch, engraved with a message that means so much more than its three words: “We Got You”. Those were the words Will, then working in customer service at the real estate coaching firm Buffini and Co, said to Carolyn when she took a leap of faith and signed up for their services. As a newly single mother at the time, she needed to find a job that allowed her flexibility while providing an income for her and her children. She attended a Buffini seminar and decided she had to make a call and hire their coaching services. This was a huge step considering her limited resources at the time. Thankfully, Will answered the phone and assured her that she was making the right choice. He knew she was in good hands. Fast forward two decades and both Carolyn and Jeff have enjoyed successful careers in real estate, which they attribute to their coach. Jeff said, “Will is kind and generous.” Will is a former Marine, a husband, father and grandfather. He and his wife live in Georgia where they’re helping take care of his mother-in-law. Recently coach Will made the comment about Jeff’s Rolex saying ‘man that is beautiful’ that he could only dream of having one. We wanted to make that happen.” And they did. The Graham’s gifted Will a beautiful Submariner, engraved with the same words that are now Buffini and Co’s official slogan: “We Got You”. Will answered the phone and assured her that she was making the right choice. He knew she was in good hands.

NEEDS LITTLE introduction: He is an MLB veteran of 22 years, an inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame, an inspiring community leader, and an exemplary family man. Ken is also a wonderful friend. Ken—whose favorite nickname is, “The Kid”—was drafted by Seattle in 1987 where he soon met Alvin Goldfarb, and a lasting friendship between the two families quickly developed. “Ken would come by the store, often with him was his mother Birdie, his father Ken Sr., and always his best friend Frank. Ken was single and loved to talk sports, cars and golf” remembers Steven Goldfarb. “One particular day, the conversation turned in a different direction. All Ken could talk about was meeting local girl named Melissa from Gig Harbor. Dad and I realized, even if Ken hadn’t yet, that this was the one!” Marriage, a home in Issaquah, and kids followed soon thereafter. Ken’s career took him from PEOPLE OF NOTE

While his incredibly smooth swing always dominated the public’s attention, his defensive play was equally spectacular. He retired with 630 home runs, 10 Golden Gloves, and as a thirteen-time All Star. Ken and Melissa now live in Florida. Their children, two boys and a girl, are mostly grown yet remain the focus of their parent’s lives. Talk to Ken about baseball and you’ll have a nice conversation—talk to him about his kids and you’ll be entertained for hours He’s deservedly a very proud papa. Today, Ken remains an important part of Seattle baseball. He’s not only an icon for the team— he’s an owner. Melissa and Ken’s giving nature take up much of their time. Ken rarely says, “no” to a charity golf tournament. Together they focus on Boys and Girls Clubs of America and encouraging black youth’s involvement in America’s pastime through the HBCU Swingman Classic. Griffey held the inaugural game at this year’s All-Star game in Seattle. The event highlights the history and legacy of HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) baseball programs while also providing 50 players with the opportunity to showcase their talent on a national stage. To all our good fortune, Ken visits Seattle often and never fails to inspire. The Goldfarb family is grateful to count the Griffeys as friends. “All Ken could talk about was meeting a local girl named Melissa from Gig Harbor. 54 BEJEWELED BORROWING A PAGE FROM LEGENDARY ADVICE COLUMNIST DEAR ABBY, STEVEN GOLDFARB SITS DOWN TO ANSWER YOUR MOST PERPLEXING JEWELRY QUESTIONS. Design Consultation What should I look for in something I intend to pass down? What makes something heirloom-worthy? As with so many things in life, quality is what makes something heirloom worthy. While almost all jewelry is tied to emotion and special occasions, some pieces are truly exceptional in quality, design, and/or value. Part of what we do at Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler is to help evaluate jewelry for this, and future, generations. What characteristics contribute to a diamond’s beauty? Clarity How many internal characteristics are within a given diamond. This is the fingerprint of the gemstone. Color Diamonds are thought of as white although most/all have some level of color ranging from yellow (most often) to blue, and even red (quite rare). The color, and relative intensity help to establish the rarity. Cut Rather than the Shape, Cut, refers to the symmetry, polish, and overall finish of a diamond. As in any artistic endeavor, technique and skill are all important. Diamond cutting is very much a form of sculpture. Carat (weight) Without over-simplifying, most agree, within reason, “Bigger is better.” Of the four criteria, I personally value cut and color most highly. Cut is the only one in which humans have a say. Color is something we each are able to see with the naked eye. ASK STEVEN THIS PAGE : MULTI SHAPED RUBY AND DIAMOND BRACELET. Since white gold and platinum have been the metals of choice for the last many years it is worth asking if yellow gold (or rose) can be combined with white. The answer is resoundingly, YES. Not only is combining everywhere in fashion, it’s also a way to make a personal statement. And, since every item of jewelry has a story, it’s often fun to pair jewelry which has been shared from one generation to the next. You’ll have wonderful stories to share at your next party. I’m looking for a holiday gift for my mother-in-law. How do I make the right impression without overdoing it? Between you and your spouse, I bet you know your motherin-law well. The advice I always share is to think of the person receiving the gift, not the gift itself. You’ll know what they are comfortable wearing, and how it will work well with other jewelry, wardrobe, and activities. You’ll likely have a good idea what dollar amount will make them comfortable as well. If you keep the person in mind, you can’t go wrong. What are your thoughts on lab grown diamonds? Lab grown can be an option for many, but it is a personal choice and one EVERYONE involved (buyer, seller, and wearer) needs to be aware. One thing to keep in mind is the value of lab-grown has gone down each year and will continue to do so. Unlike natural diamonds, they are unlimited. What’s your favorite gemstone to pair with diamonds? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Having said that, diamonds paired with color gemstones help to make both POP! The whiteness of diamonds helps to intensify a beautiful color gem. I’ve always been partial to cooler colors such as blue sapphire and forest green emeralds. “Diamonds paired with any color gemstones makes them both pop!

58 BEJEWELED Steven I love skiing, boating, golfing, playing music, and more, but all are better when shared with friends. Playing in a band is so much fun (practices are as much fun as any performance), and a round of golf with my buddies is better than going to a comedy club (sometimes I even play well). I can never move from Seattle; I love my friends too much. Your Current Favorite? I’ve always appreciated jewelry which gets to be worn, as people wearing beautiful jewelry is the best exposure for what I do every day. We’ve added to our collection of bracelets and rings that stretch. They are elegant, comfortable, and easy to take on and off. They are all made of precious gemstones and metal over a flexible steel spring. They are kind of remarkable. MEET THE EXPERTS Team Building PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHS BY JIM GARNER / JGARNERPHOTO.COM The experts at Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler share a love of fine jewelry and are extremely dedicated to providing the highest quality customer service. Their passion is evident in their enthusiasm and extensive knowledge. In keeping with this year’s theme of Now & Forever, we asked our talented team what they cherish the most, now and for years to come.

BEJEWELED 59 Mark Seahawks football. For almost 50 years (47) I’ve lived and died with the Hawks. I was at their first game in ‘76 against St. Louis and over the years have been on board for a few rides down into valleys but even more memorable peaks and summits. I go to many games and watch/listen to the rest. I love them whether they win or lose…they’re my team! I’m sure if I live to be 95, the only thing I’ll ask of my daughters is to nudge me awake and turn on the TV every Sunday. GO HAWKS!!! Your Current Favorite? I love the coffee-maker. Ann Something I always appreciate, and treasure, are friends and family. Sure, some friends are just passing through your life, still there are a precious few who are with you through good times and bad. They manage to provide wonderful memories. And sometimes, those you haven’t seen in a long time, wander back into your life at just the right time. The fun experiences you share last a lifetime. Your Current Favorite? The warmth of this fancy yellow diamond ring makes me happy. The ring itself is gorgeous and so different. Every yellow diamond is like a snowflake, unique. In daylight this ring scintillates like the sun. Amanda Everyone needs a hobby; mine is make-up. From a young age I’ve worn make-up as a vocation (I sold it), as something to do for fun (especially at Halloween or when the Barbie Movie came out), as a way to look 21 (when I wasn’t), or as a way to try something new. Make-up can lift my spirits. Best of all, it washes off and I can have a whole new look. Your Current Favorite? The Rendezvous by Jaeger LeCoultre in rose gold is beautiful. Some watches may be worn by everyone; this one is for women. The diamonds are delicate, the dial wonderfully detailed, and the celestial theme of moon and stars is simply intriguing. Enzo Jazz music. I’m an avid collector of Jazz records, both classic and contemporary. The genre’s ability to evolve over time, absorbing influences from various cultures makes it endlessly enjoyable. I know that it’s something I will be mesmerized by for the rest of my life. Your Current Favorite? The Breitling Premiere B15 Duograph is a great example of Breitling’s ability to offer exceptional watchmaking at an approachable price point. The hidden pusher in the crown allows the user to time two separate events simultaneously. I particularly love the rose gold variation with black dial. It brings a sophisticated edge to a classic design.

60 BEJEWELED Mark H Growing up in New York City, I would hardly ever see the real outdoors; the place is a concrete jungle. I really appreciate how much I can do outdoors in Washington now and I expect to forever. Your Current Favorite? I love our six row Asscher bracelet. The time, care, and love that went into creating this beautiful piece shines through. Each gemstone is set in an individual bezel and interconnected with fine gold wire to make the three hundred and forty-one (yes, that’s 341) diamonds sparkle all the more. My father was a jeweler who did all his work by hand, so I truly appreciate the artistry of this piece. Torie I so admired my grandfather. He was a farmer in Idaho who worked very hard. He not only took pride in his farm but also how he carried himself. He was small in stature and dressed impeccably when not working. I was fortunate to tailor a few of his jackets (did I mention, “small in stature?) I wear today. Because of him I always try to present myself with confidence and in the best way possible. Your Current Favorite? I love our pair of Mikimoto pearl and rose gold earrings. They are designed to look like Japanese cherry blossoms. Japan is my favorite place in the world. It’s also where I spent my honeymoon. Lisha I’ve lived in many places (Beijing, Oahu, Houston, and now Seattle) I love the local cuisine everywhere I’ve lived. Authentic Chinese food is simply better in China (at least for me). Seafood in Hawaii is wonderful and so fresh. The variety in Houston includes Middle Eastern and Vietnamese but the barbeque is THE BEST. Dungeness Crab from the Northwest is the most delicious in the world. And I love shopping for all my food at Costco…also from Seattle! Your Current Favorite? All of my jewelry is classic and important, I appreciate eye-catching jewelry. That’s why I love our elegant cushion sapphire and diamond ring. The deep blue sapphire is rich and beautiful. The diamonds add to the sparkle. Brandi When I was fifteen my dad taught me to cook. It didn’t go very well the first few meals but pretty soon I was in charge of Tuesday night dinner. Now I cook all the time. My husband is an excellent sous chef and dishwasher. We eat at home most nights because he says home is his favorite restaurant. Your Current Favorite? I find antique Art Deco jewelry intriguing and beautiful. This modern version combines platinum, rose gold, white diamonds, and a spectacular pink diamond center gemstone. The ring is wonderfully unique not only because of the pink diamond but because of the amazing workmanship and care it took to create. MEET THE EXPERTS

BEJEWELED 61 Tiffany I grew up in a musical home. No singing, just playing. Grandma taught Mom to play violin, Dad taught my brother to play drums (Dad was a drummer in the Marine military band), and I played piano (thank you Grandma), tambourine and sometimes got some time on the drum kit. Everyone danced. The sounds of the radio, records, or the family playing brought much happiness to our home. Your Current Favorite? Everything old is new again. Emerald cut diamonds are among the most classic and elegant of diamond cuts and they are enjoying a renaissance. I love this modern take with bezel set emerald cut diamonds set North-South and East-West. The bracelet is interesting, unique, and gorgeous. I know this bracelet will find a wonderful forever home! Shelly The special pieces of jewelry that I’ve received as a present, or as a gift to myself, will always be most appreciated. These include the Talisman necklace made of jewelry from all the important women in my life and the Lalique rose bowl, given to me on my 10-year anniversary with Alvin Goldfarb Jeweler (so long ago). They are all completely timeless and all still among my favorites. Your Current Favorite? I grew up on Sesame Street. I’m just the right age for it to have been a big part of my childhood. This year, Oris and Kermit the Frog combined to create a timepiece, the Pro Pilot X with a “Kermit” green dial. The watch is wonderful, lightweight and on the first of every month Kermit shows up in the date window. It’s fantastic! Kermit may have to change his signature saying to, “It is easy being green”. Sara I find gardening to be the most relaxing hobby and I hope to enjoy it for many more years. Watching something grow is good for the soul and digging in the soil brings peace and serenity. Eating vegetables I’ve grown myself is not only satisfying, but also delicious. Your Current Favorite? Every once in a while a piece of jewelry speaks to me. Roberto Coin’s graduated drop diamond earrings are just that. They are elegant, important, and different from all the others. Just how stiletto heels raise my height, these stiletto diamond earrings raise my mood and just make me happy. Roberto Coin Cento diamonds bring joy! Margarita I love to learn and acquire knowledge. I’m always finding something new to discover. I speak three languages and understand even more. Currently I’m studying Italian; I want to visit Italy to practice. Whether jewelry, clothing, or society, fashion is always evolving. My passion for fashion, in which I have a degree, keeps me constantly learning. Right now, I’m reading about Coco Chanel. I admire her so much I even named my dog, Coco, for her. Your Current Favorite? I could wear these beautiful diamond earrings every day. They are impressive yet not formal. They are unique with large cushion cut diamonds and a diamond-set French wire. I look at them and say, “Wow!”

Yes I will send some photos when our daughter arrives. I have a feeling she will love fine jewelry as well.” —Michael T. “I love my new watch. It is the perfect daily wear; tough and durable, but still interesting and refined. The only downside is that my wife has basically claimed it as her own and I rarely get to wear it. I can’t get it off her wrist! But that is a good problem to have.” —Julian L. “Thanks again for your help with my wife’s birthday/10-year anniversary gift. It truly meant so much to her. Our daughter is now asking when it will be hers!” —Ben and Kaitlin O. “I love the watch. It’s travelled with me to Florece, London, and the inaugural major league cricket season this past month.
