Growing up in Lincoln County, near the Oregon coast, he worked a variety of jobs and built and fished in his own boats. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Navy as part of a group of fishermen who manned fishing boats converted into armed patrol boats. He had some harrowing adventures in Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, mostly working out of Dutch Harbor on missions that included rescuing stranded seaplanes. After the war, he enrolled at Oregon State with other GIs, graduated and had a long, successful career as a shop teacher and counselor in middle and high schools in San Leandro, California. After retiring in 1973, he made jewelry, carved, painted and authored four books. Thompson was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Sammie, and is survived by his son, Gary.
