Founding director of the Volpentest HAMMER Federal Training and Education Center, located next to the Hanford nuclear reservation, she developed it into one of the nation’s premier training centers for workers who do the critical and hazardous jobs of nuclear waste cleanup, law enforcement and emergency response. Her crowning achievement was the establishment of a partnership with organized labor, federal and state agencies, tribes, safety professionals and community leaders to provide direction for the operation and future vision of the center. She is survived by her husband, Bill Sandusky; her daughters, Leslie and Jessica; and her grandchildren William and Alexander.
