We are a parent-driven non-profit organization building lifelong housing and a place to belong for Bay Area adults with special needs. Approximately 70,000 adults in San Mateo county have an intellectual or developmental disability and over 80% of them live at home with their families. But what happens when their family ages and can no longer care for them? There is a dire shortage of housing for this vulnerable population, and many are isolated and lonely. The Big Wave Project will provide housing, a sense of community, social interaction and personal development for these individuals. But…we have applicants who want to live at Big Wave but require financial assistance. The Rosemary Sherman Fund, a matching financial aid program, was created by one of our families to help us offer a portion of our apartments to qualified individuals in need. Our dream is for special needs adults of all economic backgrounds to share in the benefits of the Big Wave community. And what we hope will be a replicable model to the many people around the country struggling to provide long-term housing for adults with disabilities. Donate today at Bigwaveproject.org/give.
