116 PUNCHMAGAZINE.COM HORSE CULTURE Once a humble cow pasture, The Horse Park now sees perfectly-postured riders astride steeds with dazzling names like Merriewold Quintessa, Casanova, Baron de Chevalier and Gandolph the Great. It all started in 1981, when one of its founders, Robert E. Smith, envisioned a greater purpose for the land than a site for grazing bovines. He leased the property from Stanford University and set about turning it into a horse hub. With the help of generous donors (including singersongwriter Joan Baez) over the years, The Horse Park transformed into one of the premier equestrian properties in the state. Equestrian Paradise
